Preventing common tourism travel scam in Nigeria
common tourism travel scam in Nigeria, how to Prevent them and stay safe.
As tourism is fast taking a center stage in this 21st century World, and the increasing need for adventurers and sight seeing lovers to see new places, so also the increasing crimes and criminality been perpetuated by some scrupulous few to defraud tourist and travelers their hard earned money.
This scam cuts across all borders and not just peculiar to Nigeria alone. It is then very important to protect ourselves from this societal evil which is capable of turning a well planned travel trip into a nightmare, if needed precautions are not taken.
Below are things to be at alert, when on a tourist visit in Nigeria:
Corrupt Police Officers: Its very important to know that society is made up of the good, the bad and the ugly. The Police force in Nigeria is really not all as corrupt, but we have in the midst of the Police rank, some exceptionally corrupt Officers who are quick to bring up un-founded allegations against a traveler and threaten to arrest them for that offence unless the travelers are willing to "settle" give bribe, its start first with needed checks on the travelers belongings for anything that looks illegal and incriminating. So make sure as a traveler the things you carry or do are within the arm of the law, when you are ask to submit yourself for checks, please do as long as you are guarantee they are legitimate force men and don't give in to any intimidation or harassment demanding money from you.
Street Beggars: Been kind to the less privileged and giving out money is good, but one has to be very careful on when and where you give out money, the World is full of evil and handing out money to a beggar in traffic or less open areas should be avoided. Please am not saying is evil to do good unto people, but what am saying is do it wisely and in the right place. most beggars are better given food than money for food, so if you are in a place you can give, try meet the needs of the beggar like buying them food, cloths, hospital bills, rather than give out cash, as it will shock you to know that most of this beggars do with the cash been handed to them, some go to smoke hard drugs and substance with it, some taking begging as full time job and not wanting to be useful to themselves, while cases of ritual arising from given money to strangers as been recorded severally among unsuspecting travelers.
Avoid distractions: while this works, its carried out be two people or more, a person can work up to you on the drivers side while on a less busy traffic or at traffic stop light at late evening and hit your your side windows with the bid to get your attention to wind down especially at traffic stop light to challenge him, while the other sets of persons take the advantage of the distraction to either brake your side window at the passenger side to perform a quick robbery on you.
So its advisable to keep moving in very quit areas or High risk zone even when the traffic light says stop, but please watch out carefully to see to it that no vehicle is coming at opposite directions.also always avoid lowering your car windows while travelling in traffic gridlock, robbers have taking the advantage to point guns at motorist quietly while pretending to be having a conversation with them, with other road users not been aware of whats going on.
lastly keep valuables out of sight while driving in any areas you might find yourself travelling.
