Senator Bukola Saraki is a serving Nigerian senate president (June, 2015), He was born into the popular Family of Olusola Saraki, a former Nigerian Senate leader between 1979 - 1983.
Young Saraki had his primary school education at Corona School, Lagos from 1966 to 1972, later attended the prestigious Kings College on Lagos Island, one of the oldest Secondary school in
Nigeria, existing for over a 100 years, between 1973 - 1978 obtaining West African School Certificate (WAEC) and moved to round up His high school studies at Cheltenham College,
Cheltenham, London between 1979 to 1981 where he finally obtained His High School Certificate.
Dr. Bukola Saraki enrolled at London Hospital college (University of London) between 1982 - 1987, and graduated with M.B.B.S (London).
Dr.Senator Bukola Saraki has worked with various organization and government at different capacity.Between 1987 to 1988 He worked as a Medical Officer at Rush Green Hospital, Essex . 1988 to 1989 He worked as a Senior Casualty Officer at Royal Free Hospital, London. at Societe Generale (Nig.) Limited from 1989 to 1990 as Director (non-executive). He worked as Executive
Director at Societe Generale (Nig.) Limited from 1990 to 2000.
Between 2000 to 2001,Senator Bukola Saraki was appointed by the then Nigeria Democratic administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as Special Assistant to the President on Budget(His fisrt journey into politics).
He also served under the capacity of Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Non-Oil Revenue Generation 2000 to 2001. Executive Vice Chairman, Societe Generale (Nig.) Limited from 2001 to 2002.
19th April, 2003 Dr. Bukola Saraki contested the Governoship race of Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and was sworn in as Governor on May 29, 2003. He later re-run for the Office of the Governor in 2007 and won as governor for second time.
As governor of Kwara State, Dr. Saraki introduced various Policy and programs that seeks to improve lives of Kwara people, among such projects are:
- Power generation and electricity in Kwara State: through partnership with Power Holding Company of Nigeria, Dr Saraki re-positioned Ganmo Power Station at Ilorin, connecting over 375 rural communities to the National electricity power Grid, through the installation of 725 transformers and 7 substations.
- Primary health care in Kwara State, introducing a state wide outreach to reduce maternal and child motality among Kwara mothers,Developing various Hospitals across the state.
- Gave a boost to Agriculture in Kwara State.
- Infrastructure development.
He was electected to Nigerian Senate in 2011 (7th Nigeria National Asseembly) and re-elected Senator in 2015 (8th Nigeria National Asseembly) under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Kwara Central Senatorial District.
On the 9th of June 2015, in what appears to be a controversial election for the leader of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki won the vote of his colleagues at the upper chamber as senate president winning the self annointed choice candidate of his party, APC, Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan. and Senator Ike Ekweremadu emerging as the Deputy Senate President for the third time.
